We were sad to hear reported this week the passing of British comics artist John M. Burns, whose extensive portfolio boasted work on the Lady Penelope comic, the UFO strip in TV Action, and Look-in‘s Space:1999 strip, plus other strips in the pages of TV21 and numerous other non-Anderson-related publications. His career began in the late 1950s, and ran until his retirement in October 2023 – with Burns passing in hospital just two months later. You can read a feature on his life and career in volume 2 of the UFO Comic Anthology, which also collects his UFO work from the pages of TV Action.

Celebrating birthdays this week were UFO actress Penny Spencer (January 1st) and Lavender Castle voice artist David Holt (January 6th), with posthumous birthdays for Thunderbirds voice artist John Tate (January 5th 1915), Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet voice artist plus UFO guest star Charles Tingwell (January 3rd 1923), and Terrahawks voice actress Denise Bryer (January 5th 1928). Popular Anderson episodes that first aired this week in years past include TerrahawksTo Catch a Tiger (December 31st 1983), Space:1999‘s The Last Sunset (January 1st 1976), Stingray‘s The Ghost of the Sea (January 3rd 1965), Captain Scarlet‘s Seek and Destroy (January 5th 1968), Joe 90‘s Arctic Adventure (January 5th 1969), Fireball XL5‘s Space Monster (January 6th 1963), ThunderbirdsCity of Fire (January 6th 1966), UFO‘s Survival (January 6th 1971), and Lavender Castle‘s Duelling Banjos (January 6th 2000).

We’ll be back next weekend with another edition of the Gerry Anderson news roundup – so keep all space trackers fully operational!
